      THE SUMMONS SERVED

      ---------------------

Sudden Death of Two Old Residents of the County - Other Mortuary Matters

This week we are called upon to chronicle the sudden death of two citizens, William A Meech, of this city, and Samuel Hossler, of Lancaster township. Both were summoned to meet their God without a moment's warning, and to both death came suddenly and painlessly. Their deaths occurred in very nearly the same manner.
Last Friday morning when the girl employed by the family of William A Meech, of the second ward, arose to prepare their breakfast, she was surprised to find Mr. Meech lying on the floor of the bedroom, leading from the sitting room. Hastily arousing W H Meech, who lived with his parents, he came down and discovered that death had done its work some time before. Several of the neighbors were called in and the coroner notified, whose verdict is given farther on.
The night before his death or, more probable, the night his death occurred, he had complained of not feeling well, but nothing was thought of it as the trouble was not , apparently, of a serious nature. Mrs. Meech was visiting relatives in Wabash, and the other members of the family roomed in a different part of the house. He was the last to retire, and in all probability met his death as he was preparing to retire.
The deceased was 74 years of age and was a native of the state of New York. Nearly twenty years ago he removed to this State, and a year later he remove to Roanoke, where he operated a flouring mill for a number of years. He leaves a wife and three sons. The funeral occurred on Monday afternoon, the remains being interred in Mt. Hope cemetery. The services were held in the M. E. Church, of which he had been a member since his youth.
The coroner's verdict is as follows:

      CORONER'S VERDICT

      State of Indiana
      Huntington County } S S

Be it remembered that on the 23rd day of November, 1883, information was given me, as Coroner in and for the said county of Huntington, that the dead body of William A Meech, supposed to have come to his death in some manner unknown, was found in the Second ward of the city of Huntington and on said day I proceeded to the place where he died, in said Second ward of said city, and after careful, examination of the premises, I proceeded to inquire into the manner and by what means the said William A Meech came to his death. I then swore and examined certain witnesses and reduced their testimony to writing.
I further certify that the deceased was a man aged about 74 years, with no particular marks about his person. Upon hearing the witnesses and being fully advised in the premises I find that the said William A Meech came to his death by natural causes, and not by violence, viz: paralysis of the heart. I found nothing of value about his person.
Which is, this 23rd day of November, 1883, submitted.
Given under my hand and seal this 23rd day of November, 1883.
